Early in my medical career, I watched a nurse stand at an open medication cupboard with a clipboard, counting packs of stock medications. She counted each pack, wrote down totals and walked the list down to the pharmacy. I assumed she had been pulled into someone’s audit or QI project. She hadn’t. Almost every cupboard on every ward I’ve been on since runs on the same setup.
The strange part is that hospitals have what their wards need. The stock is ready to be distributed. It’s that nobody knows in real time how much is needed and where it should go, without phoning around or walking down the corridor to look.
MedCycle is what I wanted to exist when I was watching that count happen. If you’ve seen this from inside a hospital, write to me at silasrowlands@medcycle.net.
